Living Together/Cohabitation:In a so-called free union, a man and a woman refuse to give juridical and public form to a liaison involving sexual intimacy. The expression "free union" is fallacious: what can "union" mean when the partners make no commitment to one another, each exhibiting a lack of trust in the other, in himself, or in the future? The expression covers a number of different situations: concubinage, rejection of marriage as such, or inability to make long-term commitments. All these situations offend against the dignity of marriage; they destroy the very idea of the family; they weaken the sense of fidelity. They are contrary to the moral law. The sexual act must take place exclusively within marriage. Outside of marriage it always constitutes a grave sin and excludes one from sacramental communion. Some today claim a "right to trial marriage" where there is an intention of getting married later. However firm the purpose of those who engage in premature sexual relations may be, "the fact is that such liaisons can scarcely ensure mutual sincerity and fidelity in a relationship between a man and a woman, nor, especially, can they protect it from inconstancy of desires or whim." Carnal union is morally legitimate only when a definitive community of life between a man and a woman has been established. Human love does not tolerate "trial marriages." New Age Practice and Spirituality:New Age involves a fundamental belief in the perfectibility of the human person by means of a wide variety of techniques and therapies (as opposed to the Christian view of cooperation with divine grace). (2.3.4.1) It is difficult to separate the individual elements of New Age religiosity – innocent though they may appear – from the overarching framework which permeates the whole thought-world on the New Age movement. The gnostic nature of this movement calls us to judge it in its entirety. A profile of an expert witness regularly used by our esteemed courts, and permitted to practice by Colorado's Division of Regulatory Agencies

According to a four-year-old list of testimonials, Edwin Shockney —a purported Ph.D.— has participated in numerous criminal and insurance cases and, according to this Web site, has "testified in over 160 court proceedings as an expert witness," which, combined, could amount to tens of millions of dollars in settlements and jury verdicts based in whole or in part on Shockney's "expert" testimony. For example, in Tcheskidova v. ITT Federal Services, Shockney's "expert" opinion and recommendation, which appears to be in the form of a diagnostic telephone evaluation, cited in a August 1, 2008 memorandum decision on page 6 and page 9, appears to have been material not only in causing Natalia Tcheskidova's employment to be terminated, but also in her case being dismissed. Shockney testified under oath that his "undergraduate was done at Ball State University, Indiana University, State University of New York, Crossroads College. Masters level was done at Crossroads College of Divinity. Graduate school was done at, the Ph.D. at Borean [sic.] College and Graduate School. I hold a B.A. in humanities, pre- medicine, an M.A. in counseling psychology, a Ph.D. in counseling psychology with political emphasis. I am board certified as a pain management trauma specialist. I'm licensed by the State of Colorado. I'm stipulated as an expert in state, federal, and military courts. In the February 8, 2006 memorandum decision in Massari v. Potter, Shockney's opinions and affidavit are mentioned seven (7) times. He is referred to by former Judge Edward Nottingham as "Dr. Edwin Shockney," and "Edwin Shockney, Ph.D." And, in McKenna v. Astrue, U.S. district judge Rob't Blackburn cited Shockney as a "consultative examiner," whose opinion had been rejected as unsupported by the record. According to a Colorado Springs police report, the expert Shockney was charged with soliciting prostitution (specifically, asking a former therapeutic client for oral sex).1  The criminal case, No. 1996M012158, captionedPeople v. Shockney, (El Paso County Court), is classified by the court as "Closed/Suprressed." According to this undated biography, Shockney claims that he: attended Ball State University attended Elkhart Institute of Technology attended Indiana Technical College attended Notre Dame University attended Indiana University obtained a B.A. from the State University of New York (SUNY) obtained a M.A. from "Crossroads Graduate School" obtained a Ph.D. from "Berean College of California" According to this undated Curriculum Vitae, Shockney claims that he: attended Ball State University ('68-'70) for premedicine attended Indiana University ('70-'72) for premedicine graduated in '72 from Indiana Technical College's "School of Medical Technology" obtained a B.A. in humanities/counseling from SUNY in 1985 obtained a Masters degree from "Crossroads Graduate School of Divinity" in 1987 obtained a Ph.D in clinical psychology from "Berean Christian College and Graduate School" in 1991 According to this C.R.C.P. 26 disclosure, Shockney: obtained an A.S. from Ball State University obtained a B.A. in humanities/counseling from Indiana University obtained a M.A. in counseling/psychology from SUNY In addition, Shockney's application for license to the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies Division of Registrations also attests that he obtained the Masters and doctorate degrees mentioned above. Aside from the fact that the aforesaid three documents aren't congruent, the following memoranda raise questions about Shockney's claimed credentials: This memo from Ball State University establishes that Shockney attended for six months between '68 ~ '69 and earned no degree This enrollment verification from Indiana University attests that he attended off-and-on as a part-time student between '73 - '77 and earned no degree This memo from Indiana Tech indicates that "Mr. Shockney has never attended Indiana Tech" and "Indiana Tech has never offered a degree in Medical Technology in its history as a University." This enrollment verification from SUNY concludes that the school's archives contain no match for "Edwin Allen Shockney" with a 10-09-1950 d.o.b. as having attended the institution or received a degree therefrom. This memo from Crossroads College states that, "I cannot find that [Mr. Shockney] attended Crossroads College . . . at any time." This memo from the Accredation Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities states, "Berean College is not accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities . . . They have not applied, and we have no information on them" An November 20, 2008 email to KnowYourCourts.com from Joanne Wenzel with the State of California explains: In response to your inquiry regarding Berean Christian College. We do not have a listing in our database for Berean Christian College in Long Beach, California at all. We do have a listing for a Berean Bible College that was located at 13609 Twin Peaks Road, Poway, California. Berean Bible College was listed as a Religious Exempt institution from 1995 until 2003. As a religious exempt institution they were only allowed to offer programs directly related to the dogma of their church, that would preclude them from issuing a PhD. This particular school was, according to the database, offering a Bachelor of Theology degree, Basic Bible Diploma and a Graduate of Theology Certificate. These articles of incorporation indicate that Mr. Shockney formed a Colorado non-profit corporation in 1996, named "Berean College," some five years after his claimed 1991 doctoral degree from that entity. Thus, although, it appears that, not only did Shockney not earn a masters degree --at least as set forth in his proffered documents-- and, although it might also appear that he formed a corporation to award himself a Ph.D.,KnowYourCourts.com placed several calls to Mr. Shockney in an effort to obtain clarification. Shockney declined to return the calls, but his attorney, Elvin Gentry, told KnowYourCourts.com that these matters have already been presented to the local district attorney and the state's grievance board and that his client has been cleared. When asked if he could provide evidence of Mr. Shockney's degrees and accreditations, Gentry replied, "I am not in a position to do that and even if I was, I wouldn't." It is illegal to use a bogus degrees in several states, including Washington, Oregon, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Illinois, Maine, New Jersey and Virginia. Of course, Colorado citizens can rest easy, as the  State Grievance Board is working day and night to protect the public and regulate the profession, as the following memo demonstrates: [Mr.] Shockney's graduate school records are confidential and therefore not available to you . . . A doctorate education is not required for licensure as a professional counselor. You should also be aware that the terms "Ph.D." or "doctor" are not protected terms in Colorado. While [sic.] it is unethical to make representations to the public that you are a Ph.D. or doctor if you graduate from a college or university that is non-accredited, it is not illegal unless the representations you make are false. When I was just a little girl -- a high school senior, actually -- several prestigious institutions of higher education tried to recruit me, including Princeton, Dartmouth, Villanova, Stanford and Northwestern.


Judging from my blurry and drunken experience at CSU, it's unlikely I'd have graduated from any of them.


But when I think of the myriad unexplored career opportunities I robbed myself of by *not* attending Northwestern...I mean, who knows what I'd have grown up to be after having been under this professor's nutty tutelage:  a female mudwrestler...a live-sex show demonstrator...a man; heck, maybe even a tenured Professor of Quack Psychology and Holistic Perversion.


Truly, a bottomless pit of wasted potential and missed opportunities; ah well...you know what they say: "shoulda, coulda, woulda."


Me?  I just dropped out of college with a terrible hangover, and grew up to be an ordinary wife, mother and angry conservative spider writer.


But at least I didn't graduate Magna Cum Laude in jack-off science...although there is still time for me to get my degree in Advanced Potology.

Gettin' Freaky at Northwestern University

By now you've likely heard about Northwestern University professor, Dr. J. Michael Bailey's invitation to "members of Chicago's fetish community," including an exhibitionist, to "educate" undergraduate students on the finer points of fetishism and sex toys. 

With over one hundred students in attendance, the 25-year old female exhibitionist disrobed below her waist, thus enabling her 45-year-old fiance to insert into her a mechanical sex device and stimulate her to orgasm. 

On WTTW's Chicago Tonight, the exhibitionist, her fiance, and one of the lecturers from Weird Chicago Tours explained that when they arrived at Bailey's class "a film was playing. It was a very graphic representation of a woman masturbating.... There was a woman's vagina, probably ten feet tall on the screen. There was moaning. It would be porno, basically." They shared that they had talked with Bailey about "doing a demonstration to show that the g-spot orgasm is actually real."

One wonders how the United States flourished as a nation with so many young people having graduated from college without such an illuminating "education."

Bailey's chicanery likely won't surprise Northwestern's administration: apparently, Bailey's been providing porn to students under the guise of "education" for years. Alice D. Dreger offers the following description of another sexcapade that Bailey offered his students, this time involving a male-to-female "transsexual" whose birth name was Chuck Kieltyka but who now goes by "Anjelica.":

Kieltyka also arranged with Bailey opportunities to present to students in his Human Sexuality class herself, her history, and her understanding of transsexuality. She says her ''lectures were an opportunity to do 'outreach'; to educate AND entertain'' As in the case of other guest speakers, these presentations took place after the regular class session and were optional but heavily attended; between 1994 and 2003, a total of several thousand Northwestern University students saw Kieltyka's annual appearances; In these presentations, held in a large auditorium to accommodate the class size, Kieltyka showed and explained a series of still images using overhead projection....Kieltyka also presented a short video compilation she had made....


No doubt to the surprise of Bailey's students, that video compilation actually begins with a pornographic segment Kieltyka had made for herself pre-SRS. In it, as Donna Summer sings ''Love to Love You Baby'' in the background, Chuck appears as a nude woman through use of prosthetics, including false breasts, a glued-on vulva (with his penis glued up inside his body), a female mask, and a platinum blonde wig.


The woman whom Chuck appears as masturbates through simulated finger-clitoral stimulation and through the use of a dildo attached to the floor; she straddles the dildo and thrusts up and down so that it looks as if the dildo is going in and out of her vagina. (It was actually going in and out of Chuck's anus.) Kieltyka overlaid an audio clip from a porn video in this segment to provide the sound of a woman reaching orgasm. Immediately after this segment, the compilation cuts to a postop scene of Anjelica standing topless in a bikini bottom and moccasins, looking radiant and being dramatically bathed in a Rushing water fall. She brushes back her long dark hair with her hand and motions to two nearby women unknown to her to also take off their tops. They decline.

Bailey had this to say about his recent decision to allow a live sex show: "My decision to say 'yes' reflected my inability to come up with a legitimate reason why students should not be able to watch such a demonstration." Any adult who is "unable" to come up with a legitimate reason not to host a live sex show for students is a moral ignoramus and unfit for teaching.

Bailey describes his students as "open-minded grown ups rather than fragile children." Does Bailey seriously think that opposition to live sex shows in class grows out of the notion that college students are "fragile children"? Is he really that intellectually bankrupt? Or is this further evidence of his moral bankruptcy? Without making an explicit assertion, he is trying to divert attention from his corrupt and execrable decision by hinting that opposition derives from overprotective or puritanical impulses. 

Most people believe "grown-ups" are distinguished from children in part by their maturity and wisdom. Bailey demonstrates the maturity and wisdom of an adolescent. Only someone lost in spiritual darkness, as Bailey clearly is, could defend this. 

In his explanation as to why he proceeded with this controversial event, Bailey said he "was not in a mood to surrender to sex negativity and fear." Apparently, he feels no obligation to provide evidence for his suggestion that opposition to public acts of perversion -- in a classroom -- is motivated by "sex negativity and fear." A good argument could be made that it is "sex positivity" that drives opposition to live sex shows. Wisdom and respect for the sanctity of sexuality dictate that, among many things, sex acts are private acts.

Four questions pop into my fragile, fearful, sex-negative mind:

What kind of perverse ideas did Bailey weave into classroom lectures and discussions?

Does he bear any moral culpability for undermining the moral development of the young people whose parents paid thousands of dollars for a Northwestern education?

Does he bear any moral culpability if this live sex show contributes in even a small way to a current or future porn addiction in one of his students?

Is Bailey complicit in the exploitation, degradation,and objectification of the obviously troubled young woman who demonstrated this act in front of scores of strangers?

Bailey reports that "'student feedback was uniformly positive.'" No surprise there. The burnished legacy of Alfred Kinsey and his cultural progeny, the sexual revolutionaries of the 60's, burns bright at Northwestern University. The "Northwestern University independent student newspaper,"North by Northwestern, has included some articles that surely must warm the cockles of Bailey's darkened heart. For example, there is the article in the March 11 edition that offers suggestions for "eco-friendly fu**ing," which include "showering together" and using natural lubricants.

And then there was the 2009 article that suggests students have sex to de-stress during finals week. The author of that article was kind enough to include a link to a porn website that provides diagrams of and instructions for a variety of sexual positions.

But that's not all from one of our most esteemed academic institutions. There's also SHAPE, which is, according to their website, a "student organization affiliated with Northwestern University Health Service that provides education, organizes events, and generates dialogue about sexual health and sexual assault. SHAPE's mission is to increase students' comfort surrounding sexuality, encouraging them to learn and adopt sexually healthy behaviors and to recognize and address unhealthy and dangerous behaviors and attitudes regarding sexuality."

SHAPE members have contributed a sex column that appears in the North by Northwestern. In it, they have offered tips for having sex during menstruation; tips on how to make intercourse for virgins comfortable; explanations of bondage, discipline, sadism, and masochism; help for college-induced decreased libido; descriptions of orgasms; instructions on how to prolong ejaculation, whether to swallow semen, and how tomake dorm rooms more conducive to sex.

An initial feckless statement from the vice president for University Relations (no pun intended), Alan Cubbage, appeared to defend Bailey:

Northwestern University faculty members engage in teaching and research on a wide variety of topics, some of them controversial and at the leading edge of their respective disciplines....The University supports the efforts of its faculty to further the advancement of knowledge.

But perhaps wiser heads will prevail. On Thursday, Northwestern President Morton Schapiro issued this statement:

I have recently learned of the after-class activity associated with Prof. Michael Bailey's Human Sexuality class, and I am troubled and disappointed by what occurred.


Although the incident took place in an after-class session that students were not required to attend and students were advised in advance, several times, of the explicit nature of the activity, I feel it represented extremely poor judgment on the part of our faculty member. I simply do not believe this was appropriate, necessary or in keeping with Northwestern University's academic mission.


Northwestern faculty members engage in teaching and research on a wide variety of topics, some of them controversial. That is the nature of a university. However, in this instance, I have directed that we investigate fully the specifics of this incident, and also clarify what constitutes appropriate pedagogy, both in this instance and in the future.


Many members of the Northwestern community are disturbed by what took place on our campus. So am I.

Our nation's best and brightest deserve better. They deserve an academic experience worthy of Northwestern's motto: Quaecumque Sunt Vera, which comes from the New Testament and means "Whatsoever things are true."
